noimpactman (No Impact Man)

Okay, I found this blog called No Impact Man. Very cool. This guy has been working on his quest to achieve zero carbon emissions since last November, and has had his blog since February 2007.

Don't I feel like a slacker only going for 15%.

noimpactman and his wife & daughter are working on a year-long quest to figure out if there is a way to live in New York City and do so in a way where you have zero impact in terms of carbon emissions. Part of the premise seems to be that it is harder to do in a City, but I would think it is easier. For instance, nearly 50% of our household carbon comes from our two cars which we need to commute to our two jobs, which we need for
(a) health insurance, and (b) to pay just to be able to live here in a modest home. At least if we were in a City, we could ditch the cars and use public transportation.

I suppose that begs the question of why we don't move closer to our jobs, which I did kind of address earlier (when we moved here, I had a different job that allowed me to take a train to work 3-4 days a week, but I got laid off after a year, and my next job didn't have that option. Also, Tom worked 3 blocks from home for a while, but that meant we never saw each other because it was a 2nd shift job, so he switched, which means he has a commute).

Well, the whole point of this post was to suggest you check out http://noimpactman.typepad.com/!
